Kampala, January, 30th/2012;
The government has promised
to carry out investigations into the shooting at Daily Monitor journalist Isaac
Kasamani while he covered a rally organized by pressure group Activists for
Change last week.
Addressing
a press briefing at the Ugandan Media Centre at the weekend, the State Minister
for Internal Affairs, Mr James Baba, said the police had not started
investigations because they did not receive a formal complaint from Mr Kasamani.
“Despite
several attempts to make contact with the journalist... , he has failed to make
himself available to give a formal witness to investigators,” Mr Baba said.
However,
Mr Kasamani denied receiving requests from the police to record a statement on
the incident.
The
police chief, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, said they would use an independent
international investigator to conduct the inquiry.
